Seeding Near Roswell's Creeks and River
Hydroseeding in Roswell means working close to water more often than not. The city's southern boundary follows the Chattahoochee River, and Vickery Creek cuts through the old mill district, where a unit of the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area now sits. Bare soil on lots near either one can end up in the water after one storm.
A town built on falling water
Roswell King chose this spot in 1830 because Vickery Creek had the drop to power a cotton mill. The ruins of that mill and its 30-foot dam are still there. The same fall in elevation that powered a mill means steep ground on lots near the creek, and steep ground is where erosion control earns its keep.
Creek-side lots
On property that drains toward a creek, we usually set silt fence on the low side before any grading, keep the disturbed area small, and get seed and hydromulch down as soon as final grade is set. Where a bank is too steep to mow, a deep-rooted seed mix under erosion control blankets is a better long-term cover than lawn grass.
Historic district yards
The old houses around the mill district and the restored homes like Bulloch Hall and Barrington Hall sit on long-settled ground. Lawn renovation there is usually about thin, tired turf on compacted soil: core aeration, topsoil where needed, and overseeding rather than a full rebuild.
Newer neighborhoods
Out toward the city's borders with Milton, Alpharetta and Cobb County, newer subdivisions bring the opposite problem: graded red clay with little or no topsoil left. We test the ground, bring in topsoil where the surface is all subsoil, and hydroseed in one pass with fertilizer and mulch.

Roswell Questions
My backyard drops to a creek. What keeps the soil out of the water?
Silt fence on the low side, a small work area, and fast cover. Once grade is set we seed and mulch right away, and on steep banks we add blankets.
Should I grow lawn on a steep creek bank?
Usually not. Mowing a steep bank is dangerous and lawn roots are shallow. A deeper-rooted mix under erosion control blankets holds better.
My older yard is thin and patchy. Do I need new topsoil?
Often not. Aeration and overseeding fix most tired lawns. We add topsoil only where clay is showing.
What do new subdivision yards in Roswell need?
Usually topsoil, fine grading and a full hydroseed application, because builders often leave bare clay at the surface.
Can you remove silt fence once the grass is in?
Yes. Once the lawn has filled in and the soil is stable, we can pull the fence and stakes.
