Seeding Yards in One of Atlanta's Oldest Suburbs
Hydroseeding in Marietta usually means working on ground people have lived on for a long time. Marietta is the seat of Cobb County, it covers about 23 square miles, and its historic homes go back as far as the 1830s. Old yards, infill houses and the hillsides toward Kennesaw Mountain each call for a different approach.
Old yards, tired soil
Around the square and the older neighborhoods, lawns have been mowed, walked and driven on for generations. The soil is usually compacted and short on organic matter. For these we lean toward lawn renovation: core aeration, a topdressing of compost or topsoil, and overseeding, rather than stripping and starting over.
Toward the mountain
The Battle of Kennesaw Mountain was fought just northwest of town in 1864, and the land rises toward the mountain from Marietta. Newer subdivisions on that rising ground come with cut slopes and steep backyards. Those get hydromulch with tackifier, and the steepest banks get straw erosion control blankets pinned over the seed.
Creeks to the river
Sherman's troops crossed the Chattahoochee near the mouth of Sope Creek after burning the Marietta Paper Mills there. Sope Creek and other streams carry Marietta runoff to the river today. On lots that drain toward a creek, silt fence goes on the low side before grading, and we keep bare soil exposed for as short a time as we can.
Infill and redevelopment
I-75 and Cobb Parkway run through the city, and older commercial strips and lots keep turning over. Commercial hydroseeding is a quick way to close up a cleared pad or a finished retail site's landscape islands, swales and banks.

Marietta Questions
Should I strip my old Marietta lawn and start over?
Usually not. If the grade is fine, aeration, topdressing and overseeding are cheaper and work well on older yards.
My new house backs up to a steep cut. How do you keep it from washing?
We use hydromulch with tackifier on moderate slopes and erosion control blankets on the steep parts, with seed under them.
Can you seed a commercial pad near I-75?
Yes. We do commercial hydroseeding on cleared pads, swales and landscape areas, and can set silt fence and inlet protection first.
Does my lot need silt fence if it drains to a creek?
Most do while soil is bare. It keeps mud out of creeks like Sope Creek that run to the Chattahoochee.
When should I overseed an older lawn here?
Fescue lawns do best overseeded in early fall. Warm-season lawns are better repaired in late spring.
