Seeding the Hills of Paulding County
Hydroseeding in Dallas is hill work. At about 1,043 feet, Dallas is one of the highest suburban cities in the metro, and the ground climbs from there: Elsberry Mountain reaches 1,310 feet and Ray Mountain 1,252 feet. New homes on those hills come with steep cuts and fills.
A different river basin
Dallas drains to the Alabama-Coosa-Tallapoosa River Basin, not the Chattahoochee. Pumpkinvine Creek, a tributary of the Etowah, is the largest stream through the area. Its valley is deep enough that the Pumpkinvine Creek Trestle stands 126 feet above the water. Lots that drain toward it need silt fence and fast cover.
Steep cuts, fast runoff
On steep backyards and road cuts, loose mulch alone tends to slide. We use bonded fiber matrix or straw erosion control blankets, with seed, on anything steep, and build swales or diversion berms so runoff goes around a slope rather than down its face.
Old gold lots
Paulding County was carved into 40-acre gold lots in the 1832 lottery, but settlers found little gold, mostly at Lost Mountain, and turned to farming instead. Where farmland becomes subdivisions, topsoil is often thin.
Civil War earthworks
The Battle of Dallas, New Hope Church and Pickett's Mill were fought here in 1864, and trenches survive at the historic sites. That is a reminder that this ground has been dug and reshaped before; we always check for drainage quirks on older lots.

Dallas Questions
My backyard is a steep fill slope. What will hold it?
Bonded fiber matrix or straw blankets with seed. Loose mulch tends to slide on steep fill.
Water runs down the face of my slope. Can that be redirected?
Yes. A swale or small berm at the top sends water around the slope instead of over it.
My lot drains to Pumpkinvine Creek. What do I need?
Silt fence on the low side while soil is bare, and quick seeding once grading is finished.
Will grass grow on a road cut?
With blankets or bonded fiber matrix and a low-maintenance mix, yes.
Is topsoil needed on old farmland lots?
Often. Many former farm fields here have thin topsoil over clay.
