Seeding Lakeside Yards in the Lake City

Hydroseeding in Acworth is often about protecting the water as much as growing grass. The city sits on the southeastern banks of Lake Acworth and Lake Allatoona on the Etowah River, and about 6% of its area is water. Many yards slope straight to a shoreline, so whatever washes off them ends up in a lake.

Two lakes, one history

When the Etowah was dammed to form Lake Allatoona, people in Acworth worried that low land near town would turn into swamp. They petitioned for a second dam, and Lake Acworth was created in the 1950s. Today, lots near both lakes have the same problem: slopes, runoff and soft ground near the water.

Lakefront slopes

On a lot that falls to a shoreline, we set silt fence along the bottom before any grading and work the slope in sections. Once a section is at grade, we cover it with hydromulch and seed, or pin straw blankets on steeper ground, so no large area sits bare when a storm comes through.

Farm ground under the subdivisions

Cotton was farmed around Acworth from the 1890s into the 1920s, until low prices in the Depression ended it. Much of the land that became neighborhoods had been cropped hard. We check topsoil depth and add topsoil where the surface is red clay before seeding.

Foothill terrain

Acworth sits in the foothills of the North Georgia mountains, so even away from the water there is enough slope to move soil in a heavy rain. Fine grading that directs water away from houses and into stable swales is part of almost every lawn installation here.

Acworth Questions

My yard runs down to the lake. How do you keep mud out of the water?

Silt fence along the bottom first, work in sections, and cover each section with mulch and seed or blankets as soon as it is graded.

Can grass grow right to the shoreline?

Often a deeper-rooted, unmowed buffer near the water holds the bank better than turf. We can seed both zones.

Why is my new yard so hard and red?

Much of Acworth was farmland that lost topsoil over the years. We add topsoil before seeding where needed.

Do you seed slopes that are too steep to mow?

Yes. We use blankets or bonded fiber matrix and a low-maintenance mix that does not need regular mowing.

What season is best to seed a lake lot?

Early fall for fescue and late spring for Bermuda, but erosion control goes on whenever the soil is bare.
