Lawns in the Town of Seven Springs

Hydroseeding in Powder Springs sometimes starts with water coming out of the ground. The city is named for the seven springs within its limits, whose mineral water turned the surrounding sand black like gunpowder. Springs and seeps are still a factor on some lots, and grass will not establish where the ground never dries.

Finding wet ground first

During an estimate we look for soggy spots, standing water and moss. If water is seeping up, seeding alone will fail. A small regrade, a swale, or in some cases a drain gets the water moving, and then we seed.

Gold that was not there

The town was incorporated as Springville in 1838 by settlers who came looking for gold. They found little at Lost Mountain and along Brownsville Road. What they found was farmland, and the town's newer neighborhoods sit on that old farm ground, typically clay with thin topsoil.

A small, settled town

Powder Springs covers about 7.2 square miles, and population went from 13,940 in 2010 to 16,887 in 2020. Work here is a mix of new lawn installation on new lots and lawn repair on older yards, with silt fence whenever a lot that drains toward a creek or street is opened up.

Civil War ground

A skirmish at Lattermore's Mills in June 1864 was part of the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain. On any lot, the low ground along a creek is where drainage trouble tends to show up first.

Powder Springs Questions

Part of my yard is always soggy. Can you seed it?

We fix the water first with a regrade, swale or drain, then seed. Seed on constantly wet ground just rots.

How do I know if I have a seep?

Ground that stays wet days after rain, moss, or water coming up in one spot are common signs.

My new yard is clay. Do I need topsoil?

Usually some, yes. It helps roots get established and holds moisture in summer.

Do you do lawn repair on older yards?

Yes. Overseeding and patching bare spots are a big part of our work here.

Is silt fence needed for a small project?

If bare soil can wash to a creek or the street, it is a good idea, even on small jobs.
